We asked our teachers for some feedback on the advert and they had good suggestions that we were keen to change. They said that we should use a different image as we had used the same image as the DVD cover, and it would be nice to use a variety so we’ve used an image from the same shoot but this time next to a tree, we thought this looked more effective. They said that the middle text ‘music made a man of me’ is quite dull and needs to be bolder so we edited this and made the white outline bolder and the actual black text bolder, this made an instant better visual look. Also the text at the top of the page is black and they said it is difficult to see, as the background is busy and slightly blends in. Also the ‘25th November’ font wasn’t appropriate and didn’t go with our artist theme so we changed it into a font which we have throughout to keep the theme, they also said that this text looks unprofessional as the white box is still around so we used the magic tool to remove it. The text still didn’t stand out so we added an effect which made it white and fuzzy around the edge of the text so the text is dominant from the background.
We thought the whole advert was missing something then thought we would add one more thing by adding store logo’s at where the viewer can find the album and put them in the bottom right hand corner.

Analysis of Music Adverts
50 Cent Music Advert
This music advert is quite masculine based where you can see the back of 50Cent showing off all his muscles. His tattoo ‘South Side’ shows what kind of character he is as it’s quite a gangster expression from a poorer background. You can see this music advert also advertises the film ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ as the music is from the soundtrack of the film. Having the gun in the back of his trousers gives off what kind of film it is, showing violence.
Colby O’Donis Music Advert
This advert is quite simplistic yet quite effective. I like the flowing theme of the colour red, it gives off the impression that he’s quite a ladies man with the look in his eye he’s giving as the medium of shot lets you see his facial expression well. The position of his hands give off that he’s thinking about something which reflects on what the advert title is saying ‘What U Got’, as if to make out ‘Are you better than me?’ sort of expression.
Tinchy Stryder Music Advert
This advert is brightly coloured with a simplistic black background to make it stand out more and eye catching to the audience. This advert gives the theme of an RnB genre of music as the bright colours reflect a dance floor feeling to brighten the mood. You can see stars editied into his sunglasses which links with what his jumper saying ‘Star’ to give off he that he’s a true popstar and has ‘Star Quality’.
Rihanna Music Advert
This is quite a simplistic advert as well, but where as this is because the image is a close up of Rihanna which is taking most of the room up. The theme is quite a natural look with neutral colours of yellow and white. It doesn’t have a lot of information on it but I suppose this is a good thing as it gets straight to the point and gives all the information you need.
Wretch 24 Music Advert
This music advert gives off a masculine based audience as well, with the blue sketchy background, which is almost graffiti like. I like how the artist links with the background as his hands have the cartoon effect on too which creates a strong theme for the poster. The genre of this advert is RnB/Rap as the artist is holding a diamond cross necklace out of his pocket showing he likes to have ‘Bling’ which gives off the gangster impression.

Analysis of similar videos
Dirty Funk- Steve Appleton
This video is very performace based where throughout the vide you see Steve Appleton on stage giving a performace to an audience. The use of lighting is very effective making it look more ‘funky’ which relates to the song title. It’s quite an upbeat pase of music which is why there are so many straight cuts to make the video quite fast pased and flashy to go with the song beat. When you see the audience you mostly only see females dancing and having a laugh, which shows Steve Appleton being quite loved by a female target audience as he has the ‘Popstar’ look which can be quite appealing. I like how half way through the audio cuts off to make out as though it’s a live show he’s performing and that there’s a sigh of “awww” from the audience showing how much they love him.
City Won’t Sleep Tonight- Steve Appleton
This video has more of a narrative aspect compared to ‘Dirty Funk’ but also has some performance based shots in the video aswell. When he’s performing it’s more casual as there’s some tracking shots of him just walking down th street singing which shows quite a relaxed and casual atmosphere to the video. There are also some stronger performace shots where he’s on top of the roof and you can see buildings in the background setting a more scenic view for the audience and showing the city life which links with the song title. Steve Appleton is once again having a female character flirting with him showing the narrative side of the video coming through, which show’s hes a ladies man as he gets in the car with three other girls.

Theorist- Andrew Goodwin/John Stewart
Beyonce- Diva
A media theorist who has a composed set of ideas believes can be applied to any music video.
Andrew Goodwin is a theorist who believes music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. He feels that the band/artists should have many close ups of themselves so it creates an attraction to the audience, For example if it was a Rock Music video Goodwin thinks they should have a stage performance of the band. Goodwin believes that there should be a relationship between the lyrics/visuals and the music/visuals as this makes a music video flow better.
I have chosen the song Diva by Beyonce as i think this video links well with Goodwin’s theory but also challenges it in someways.
In Beyonce’s music video it demonstrates many genre characteristics from her stage performance which is shown mostly all the way through the video which shows it’s a strong point of the video. Although Beyonce is dancing with two other girls, they’re positioned behind Beyonce showing that there less important putting all the focus on Beyonce, even the costumes show this as Beyonce is wearing all black where as the two other girls are wearing black and white, which makes Beyonce the unique one out of three.
Goodwin believes the deamand of record labels their should be lots of close-ups of the artisit as this is what they look for. As Beyonce is performing the camera zooms in on her proving she’s the main focus point in the video letting the audience see close ups of their favourtie artist which premotes the artist.
This video only has one relationship with visuals and lyrics where the lyrics says ‘Diva’s getting money, if you aint got no money then you got nothing on me’ showing Beyonce holding a fan made out of a money showing she’s a true ‘Diva’ and has pleanty of money to go around, and that she’s better than everyone else.
There is no reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens) this is prehaps because the video has no real storyline and is mostly performanced based which has resulted in the video just being a dance routine the whole way through.
As Beyonce is a very unique artist her video has no intertextual reference with other video’s. Beyone loves performing and premotes herself as a true female character as she only has female dancers and band members. She loves to have a strong performance based music video and has the often deep and emotional storyline in some others.
John Stewart is another theorist who believes that the majority of visual references come from the three areas of: Fashion, Cinema and Art Photography. I believe Stewrats theory isn’t as accurate as Goodwin’s as in Beyonce’s videos she always has a strong performance based video with no concept of fashion, cinema or art photography challenging Stewarts theory to be not as good as Goodwin’s.

Teachers feedback of Rough DVD Cover
We asked our teachers for some feedback on the DVD cover and the things that they said that they liked were the main picture as it was good scenery an the fact we cut ‘Lucas’ out of the picture so we could change the colour of the rest of the image and kept him the same colour, they also commented on the duck in the corner of the image saying it was cute and a good effect. They also liked the font of ‘Lucas Appleton’ as they thought it looked quite professional.
The things that they suggested we improve on was the position of the songs on the back of the cover, and also that they need to be made bigger as there not easy to see therefore can’t be read. The also suggested that we add more detail to the back of the cover to make it look more like a dig pack instead of a CD cover. We also needed to add a rating to the spine to show what age the DVD is rated, and the final thing which we were told to act on was the font of ‘music made a man of me’ they thought it was a awful font therefore we will change to make the DVD cover look to the best of our ability.

Diary of Filming
Basis of storyline
Our storyline shows flash blacks when the black and white scenes are shown of the main actor’s child hood showing that he is still a player with the same three girls from when he was little. It also shows his frustration about it. We have used the lyrics “Music made a man of me” is hinting that he should become a man and not mess about with girls any longer. Also with the lyrics in the song “Travelling through life” this idea of him going back in time reflects this belief.
Diary
Day 1 of filming -October
The first day we filmed we decided to start with the beginning of the video by filming shots of the actors getting ready for example putting on make up, brushing teeth, putting on items of clothing this shows the beginning of the day. We also videoed shots from inside a car showing cars driving fast, speed landscapes we did this because from the lyrics the song is about travelling through life.
Day 2 of filming -October
In day 2 of filming we just needed some car shots to fit in with the story of travelling through life, so we filmed shots of outside of the car whilst the car was moving and also shots of the main actors feet changing gears and accelerating to show that they are getting faster. The other thing which we filmed was the moon as we needed this for the end of the video when the day has ended.
Day 3 of filming -October
In day 3 of filming we filmed such things as the main actor brushing his teeth as we needed this for the start if the video, we filmed him in a mirror shot brushing his teeth and then washing his hands while he splashes water up we thought this was quite a good effect. The other thing which we filmed was over the shoulder and point of view shots of some of the girl actors texting the main actor.
Day 4 of filming -October
On day 4 we did more car shots, with Hall walking out the house and walking towards the car, we also done more car shots day and night while we had access to the camera to make use encase to get more options of footage to use. At the end of the video he picks one girl so we decided to film the girl and ‘Lucas’ in a cafĂ© talking and laughing.
Day 5 of filming -October
Day 5 we went to a car park that overlooks the beach, we filmed things such as one of the girl actors and the main actor kissing with the sea in the background on the edge of a cliff and also sitting on the edge of the hill with the lighthouse in the background we thought this was quite a good location as we tried to vary as many locations as we could, we also did some performance shots when it got dark in the grass in the middle of the road on the sea front we had the microphone with him singing and the cars going past. We also waited until the sunset and filmed that behind some houses. The final thing we filmed on day 5 was cars and buses going past on the road we did this to again show travelling.
Day 6 of filming -October
On day 6 we filmed some more car shots as the first ones weren’t that successful, we filmed things such as turning the sound of the radio up and down, as the song is about music, we also filmed the speed o’meter which shows the rapid increase in speed, also things such as traffic lights a we wanted to capture the red light when the music says stop. We attempted to film silhouettes in the dark by shining car headlights on people and dancing in front of the headlights, this wasn’t going very well so we decided to do this again on another night with more people as we thought it would be more successful.
Day 7 of filming -October
On the 7th day we filmed ‘Lucas’ singing playing an acoustic guitar indoors, we thought this was a good idea because of the amount of lights in the room that would focus on him as the room had spotlights and a white background, this option was not successful at when we seen the uploaded images it did not look as professional as we thought it would.
We tried filming the car lights again trying to get silhouettes using people dancing in front of headlights and cars flashing around. However like the first time the lighting wasn’t right so we didn’t end up using this footage in the video.
Day 8 of filming -October
On the 8th day we went to the beach again and filmed landscape shots of the beach these weren’t used in the video as the lighting bad as it was starting to get dark, we also filmed one of the girl actors and ‘Lucas’ walking along the beach and another girl actor writing ‘Nicola loves Lucas’ in the sand then Lucas kicking it away like he didn’t care about her as much as she cares about him. We did many shots like this from different angles as it was an important scene in the video therefore we wanted it to go well, although this was a quite rushed shooting as it was getting dark very quickly therefore we didn’t have a lot of time it went quite well.
Day 9 of filming -October
We needed footage of the younger children as the actors in their childhood and we thought the park was a good location that matched the look of young children and fun memories. We filmed them on the swings together, riding a bike, sliding down slides, random objects, and laughing generally playing around with leaves etc. In the park there was a nice scenic area with large rocks and steps were we thought was suitable to film for a performance shot, we filmed Daniel (younger Lucas) and Hall (Lucas) sitting in the same position singing the whole song a few times so we could get different angles, we sat them in the same spot and kept the camera in the same position while filming each angle. In the end we didn’t use these performance shots because the ending idea of Daniel turning into Hall seemed a better to just use that at the end and not involve the same shot anywhere throughout the video.
Day 10 of filming -October
On the 10th day of filming we were in school and used the main hall to do some performance shots, as there was a black background, we filmed from many angles of him singing the song a few times. We then thought the hall would look better if there was an actual audience watching him so we went up to the 6th form common room and asked our peers to come down to the hall and act as an audience, we filmed them cheering, clapping and jumping up from behind them, their faces and from a few angles to get a variety of clips.
Day 11 of filming -October
On day 11 we filmed Hall in his room again using editing to make an effect of him lying in different positions over a long amount of time by keeping the camera in the same position and getting him to move around different parts of the bed. We also filmed him on his bed playing the guitar, we tried to get a home effect by using this idea, this was to use in the instrumentals as there is a strong guitar base used in the song. We also redone the fridge shot as the one before was dull and not steady. We also filmed more indoor shots of Hall playing the guitar from all different angles matching the string audio of the actual song for the instrumentals, this footage was not successful as the setting was not appropriate as It didn’t look professional from the feedback we could use a different setting and agreed with this comment. We did not put the guitar shots into the overall video because we thought the main singer looked better without.
Day 12 of filming -October
This was our last day if filming before the rough cut and we had one blank spot which needed to be filled so we filmed one of the girl actors Nicola, stroking a computer screen as there was a picture of Lucas on the screen, we knew we wouldn’t use this clip but needed to use it to fill in a gap in the rough cut, we tried to film this a few times from a few different angles but knew it wasn’t a shot we would be using in the final video.
Day 13 of filming -November
On the 13th day we filmed inside a house, we did bedroom shots of Holly the main actor girl with ‘Lucas’ having a laugh in the bedroom, then we filmed the other two girls knocking on his door it shows him going down the stairs to answer the door to the both of them and slamming the door in their faces. We then filmed Holly and ‘Lucas’ having a dramatic argument about the situation resulting in holly slapping Lucas. After this shot has ended we have filmed Holly holding pictures of Lucas and crying also shots of her going to sleep with him next to her but when she turns around he isn’t there. We then filmed Nicola and Lucas at the metro station where Lucas meets Nicola off the metro.
Our storyline shows flash blacks when the black and white scenes are shown of the main actor’s child hood showing that he is still a player with the same three girls from when he was little. Video Rough Cut Feedback
We received feedback from our peers in our media class for our rough cut of the music. 5 of our respondents said that our rough cut was at the level 2/3, 9 of our respondents said that it was at level 3 and the final 2 of our respondents said that the rough cut was at the level 3/4.From our 16 respondents comments we have found out what they liked about our video and what they thought we could do better. The things which our peers liked were the shots in the car, this suggests that he is ‘travelling through life’ which are lyrics in the song, another thing they liked about the car shots was the speed o’ meter which received a lot of comments as they thought that it was a good shot how we increased the speed so it looked like the car was increasing its speed rapidly. Our peers also liked our use of mise-en-scene for example we used various locations throughout the video, for example the house, beach, car, park etc, and what was particularly liked was the fridge shots and also how the costumes were linked throughout for example the checky shirts worn by the main singer and also when he was little. The children received a lot of comments how it was a good idea using them for when the main singer was younger as it made the story line more clear, especially how we edited it into black and white which shows that it was in the past, and the fact that we had a fuzzy screen at the start of the video which again lets the audience know that it is set in the past. The majority of the feedback said that they liked the introduction how we used close-ups of the three girls and main singer getting ready, the close ups which we used were short and edited quickly together. This fit in with the fast pace of the song. Our peers seemed to like the bed shots where he is moving around the bed in different positions to show that he is thinking and this had a lot of comments made about it. It was also said on numerous occasions that we had a good narrative story line as it was a bit different to a normal love story, and also said that we had a strong ending where the lyrics say ‘music made a man of me’ and it shows the younger main singer transform into a older version suggesting that music has made a man of him.The things which our peers said that we could improve on are as followed, performance don’t match the music and that the singing isn’t in sync with the music therefore we will improve this by making sure he is singing in time with the music, another thing about the performance shots that was mentioned was that they were to long, we will over come this problem by cutting the shots shorter and also vary the angles as people thought we had to many shots of him just standing in the same position therefore we will maybe get him to move around a bit more and not have him looking down so much as many people thought it was slightly inappropriate. Another thing involving the performance shots is that they weren’t in daylight, although its hard to film in the day with the nights getting dark earlier we will try and improve this so you can see him better. A thing which we defiantly need to fix is the guitar shots, as our main singer cant actually play the guitar so we had somebody play our peers found this obvious and suggested we changed it, also the guitar shots when he’s in the bed, sofa etc have been suggested to be taken out we will do this to change our mark. Other things which we will improve our things such as the random bus, the stop sign, stroking the computer screen, pace lost in the middle of the video, we will dispose of all of these shots as people didn’t think they were necessary, and we will also try to speed the pace back up to fit in with the music in the middle of the video.Things which we have also been told to improve on are the lighting between shots we are going to make sure we don’t skip from night and day. We are also going to add more narrative emphasis for example introducing the younger main character earlier and more blending from the boy to the man this will add more emphasis to the video and make the narrative more clear. And the main killer shot we are going to add is him singing very slowly with cars going past then we can increase the speed to the pace of the music and the cars will be going past a lot faster.
